The romantic Middle Rhine

The country house hotel “Zum Kronprinzen” is located in Dellhofen, on the romantic Middle Rhine and on the edge of the Hunsrück in one of the most beautiful holiday regions in Germany; idyllically embedded in the midst of unspoilt nature, near the Schönburg and the town of Oberwesel, known as the town of towers and wine.

The Upper Middle Rhine Valley is a natural unit within the Middle Rhine region on the Middle Rhine. It extends upriver in the southeast approximately to a line connecting the Rochus Chapel in Bingen with the Niederwalddenkmal in Rüdesheim, and downriver in the northwest to the mouth of the Lahn near Lahnstein, just above Coblenz.

The Upper Middle Rhine Valley is located in Rhineland-Palatinate, on the southern eastern shore also in Hesse, and separates the Taunus in the east from the Hunsrück in the west. On June 27, 2002, the World Heritage cultural landscape of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley, with its course slightly widening to the north as far as the mouth of the Moselle in Koblenz, was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list.

One of the most beautiful stages of the Rhine Cycle Route. It starts in the beautiful town of Oberwesel and then continues along the Rhine bends to the well-known Lorelei. The almost 200-meter-high limestone rock exerts a magical power on many visitors. It is not for nothing that numerous buses full of visitors from all continents park here. For the following kilometers to Koblenz, you will follow the Rhine in a narrow gorge and pass magnificent castles that were often rebuilt in the 19th century after falling into disrepair.

Another highlight is, of course, the city of Koblenz. From here, you can also reach the mouth of the Moselle and the Moselle Cycle Path.

The cultural landscape of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Upper Middle Rhine Valley is a unique experience for hikers. Discover the unique landscape between Oberwesel and Urbar, which is strongly influenced by viticulture, on the 1.3-kilometre-long Oelsbergsteig. The Oelsbergsteig offers everything a hiker's heart desires: a varied route, narrow paths, and spectacular views of the surrounding nature. Those who climb the Oelsbergsteig will experience the hardships that winegrowers have been facing for centuries in order to cultivate wine on these steep slopes.

On the Lorelei plateau, along the premium hiking trail “Rheinsteig”, our summer toboggan run LORELEY-BOB is a special attraction.

In comfort sleds, the tobogganers, alone or in pairs, race down into the valley at up to 40 km/h in a 700 m long stainless steel trough. Before that, a lift system comfortably transports you to the mountain station, where the toboggan is automatically released for the descent. Children from the age of three can go sledding if accompanied by an adult; from the age of eight, the facility can be used alone. With two brake/acceleration levers, the tobogganers determine their speed, according to their own preference. The special thing about the track is the action-packed course, which is peppered with a labyrinth of 7 curves, further S-curves, waves and jumps for that extra bit of fun. At our toboggan ticket office, ice cream, drinks and muffins are available at affordable prices. The access to the summer toboggan run is only 50 meters from the parking lot of the visitor center on the Lorelei.

The World Heritage area includes parts of two famous German wine-growing regions: the southern part of the Mittelrhein wine-growing region and the northern tip of the Rheingau wine-growing region. Both growing areas are among the oldest in Germany. Based on archaeological finds, viticulture here can be traced back to Roman times.

Until the High Middle Ages, the steep slopes between Koblenz and Rüdesheim were also terraced and developed for viticulture, provided they were suitable for their southern exposure. The still important wine town of Bacharach developed into the most important wine market on the Middle Rhine. Not only the wines of Bacharach and the surrounding area were offered for sale here. The products of the Viertäler region, with the towns of Ober- and Niederheimbach, Manubach, Rheindiebach, Oberdiebach and Steeg, as well as many wines from the southern wine-growing regions, such as the Rheingau, Rheinhessen and the Palatinate, and even from Baden and Alsace, were also sold here.

Classic grape varieties are predominant in the Mittelrhein. Here, the Riesling, in particular, finds ideal conditions for growing and ripening.

With 70% of the cultivation area, it is the number one white wine grape variety in the Mittelrhein and is rightly called the “Queen of the Vines”. Its small, late-ripening grapes produce, like no other grape variety, the fine, racy character, the finesse and nuanced interplay of bouquet and taste that has led to the early world renown of Rhine wine.

The Müller Thurgau grown on steep slopes has a very intense and distinctive flavor. The wine tastes particularly spicy. In the glass, it develops a fragrant, floral muscat tone. In the dry flavor, the winemakers market it under the name Rivaner.

Weisburgunder and Grauburgunder are increasingly being planted in the Middle Rhine region and, along with Riesling, are ideal food companions.

The best-known red grape variety in the Middle Rhine region is Pinot Noir. Its velvety yet fiery flavor is one of its strengths, as are its power and body. The vine needs time to ripen. Our winemakers allow it a long growing season and are usually rewarded with high Oechsle degrees for their willingness to take risks.

The Hunsrück High Game Reserve is a wildlife park on the northern outskirts of Rheinböllen in the Hunsrück. Numerous animals that live or once lived in the region, including lynx, wolves, bears and wild boar, live here on an area of almost 100 hectares.

The park also includes a falconry with a daily bird of prey show. A special feature is that several species of animals can move freely in the park, mainly deer, fallow deer and sika deer, as well as mouflon.

The outstanding features of the World Heritage Site include around 40 castles, palaces and fortresses along just 65 kilometers of the Rhine between Bingen and Koblenz: this density of castles is unique in the world!
The reason lies in history: because of its strategic location and the lucrative customs duties, the Middle Rhine Valley has always been a bone of contention for numerous lords - including the archbishoprics of Cologne, Mainz and Trier, counts palatine and landgraves, as well as free imperial cities and lower nobility. The castles often served as toll stations, but also protected a certain area against warlike neighbors. They were not only built for strategic reasons in particularly conspicuous places, but also highlighted by bright plaster and high towers, visible from afar, as a “sign of power” of their owner.
